Short essay competition on migration seeks abstracts [Worldwide]

Journalists and writers under 30, with an interest in migration issues, can participate in this essay competition.

The Mixed Migration Centre (MMC) is inviting writers and researchers under 30 from Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East to participate in its 2025 Emerging Perspectives Short Essay Competition.

The competition seeks essays that explore how current geopolitical turmoil and a shifting world order are influencing migration from the perspective of the author's country of origin. Topics may include: displacement due to conflict, changes in asylum and resettlement policies, the impact of strict border controls, and economic hardships resulting from reduced development and humanitarian aid. ​

Submissions can be opinion pieces, personal narratives or reportage-style articles.

To apply, candidates must submit a 200-word abstract outlining their intended essay. Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full essay of up to 1,500 words by June 23. Five winning essays will be published in the Mixed Migration Review 2025 and each winner will receive a prize of US$1,000.

Submit the abstract by May 5.
